Icebreaker Cruise in Kemi

Order a cruise on Sampo Icebreaker! Sampo is the one and only tourist ice breaker in Finland with several departures weekly.

This trip takes you out to the Bothnian sea. On the ship you can listen to the presentation about the ship and attend the guided tour which will take you into a massive engine room and captain’s board. Then, in the middle of the largest ice field in Europe, you may drop into the sea and float in warm survival suit. Swimming is allowed for adults only. Lunch is served in the ship’s cosy restaurant. After this unique experience, the captain of the ship gives you a certificate as a memory!

For additional price you have an option to drive by snowmobiles from the city of Kemi and enter the icebreaker at the sea or enjoy their premium meals.

Finland is the only country in the world where all the ports freeze during the winter. Finland’s industries rely very much on maritime transportation, so keeping the winter ports open and operational is essential for international competitiveness.  Constructed in 1960, the icebreaker Sampo served in active icebreaking duty from 1961-1987.
