As twilight faded on our journey out into the wilderness on our way to our viewing spot, the hazy cloud began to disappear. By the time we made it to our hilltop the situation was quite good, so many stars in the sky tonight. The cloud kept retreating until we could see the arc of the northern lights reaching across the sky, the wispy cloud illuminated by the moon cutting into the arc in places. Then the last thin lines of the cloud just faded out of the sky leaving the now pale arc of the northern lights clearly visible, at last. As always the brightness of the northern lights changed as we watched, our photographs also picked up the feint purple above the green band. The cloud then began to return to take over the sky once more, the fireside became very attractive. On our way back to town we kept checking for signs of the northern lights, the sky was becoming clearer in places. We got one last sighting of the northern lights from a hilltop, they were dancing across a clear hole in the cloud just for us to watch.
