SATURDAY     

Your guide fetches you from Rovaniemi Airport. Settle into your accommodation in Rovaniemi city centre.

SUNDAY   

Introduction to Rovaniemi – the capital of Lapland. Sight seeing in the city by mini bus. Visit the main church and see the Christian divine service. Visit Arktikum museum. Arktikum is the provincial museum of Lapland full of interesting exhibitions. Introduction to the Sami culture and the life in Lapland.

MONDAY

The nature of Lapland. Today we make a trip to the wilderness. We pass the Pisavaara nature park – the strictest nature reservation in Finland. Our destination is a wilderness lodge in the forest. Traditional country meal as lunch. Great opportunity to see wild animals and beautiful nature.

TUESDAY

The Arctic Circle and Santa Claus Village. Today we cross the Arctic Circle and get a certificate of the crossing. We have an opportunity to meet Santa Claus himself. Posting your cards in the Santa’s Post Office. Lunch in the village. Good possibilities to buy hand made souvenirs. We also visit Pilke science center and learn all about forests in Lapland.

WEDNESDAY

The animals of Lapland. Today we have a trip to the arctic zoo of Ranua. Introduction to the wild animals living in Lapland. A great selection for the day as you got to see brown bears, lynxes, wolfs, gluttons, golden eagles, reindeers, moose, polar bears etc. Lunch in the zoo.

THURSDAY  

Handicrafts in Lapland.

First we visit Marttiini’s old knife factory. The building of the Marttiini Old Factory forms an essential part of the history of Rovaniemi city. It was built during the Winter War in 1940, but in the Lapland War the destruction of the city of Rovaniemi was also to become the destiny of this newish factory building. The building was saved from the destruction by a miracle. The attempted explosion was prevented by a brave young boy, who had hidden in the furnace of the factory and saw soldiers placing explosives in the building. The boy was able to prevent the complete destruction of the building. Though the factory had suffered bad fires, soon after the war it was renovated to its former splendour and the knife factory continued with its operations in these premises up to the early 1970s.

After a few decades of quiet life the building was restored under the supervision of the Finnish National Board of Antiquities in 1998 as the renovation site of the Rovaniemi Housing Fair. At the time also the Marttiini factory shop returned to its roots, still operating in these premises.

In the afternoon we visit Kangasniemi’s horn workshop. The folk living along the Ounasjoki River have always been good with their hands and cherish old traditions. The making of Lappish jewellery and artistic handicrafts is a pleasant and interesting job. Look for yourself what traditional skills can achieve!

They make a variety of utensils and decorative items from natural materials, which you can buy from our workshop for your own enjoyment, or as a Lappish gift. They manufacture traditional Lappish knives, drums, spoons, salt cellars and sugar bowls, and jewellery. They prefer to use renewable natural materials in our handicrafts: Reindeer antler and leather, bark, silver pine and burl. Their principle material is reindeer antler, which has long been a traditional raw material that has been utilised in the north for decades. Their wide range of products will definitely mean you will find a really nice souvenir.

FRIDAY

Visit at the reindeer farm. Program at the farm varies troughout the year. See an authentic farm and discuss about wilderness life and reindeer herding with local people. This farm has herded reindeers already generations. Feel the spirit of the old farm. Some time for shopping in the city of Rovaniemi is available in the afternoon.

SATURDAY  

Transfer to the airport.
