Welcome to Lapland! After your airport pick up you will be transferred to the kennel where you will meet the dogs and have a briefing about the trail. Enjoy a lunch on open fire and participate in a short training run after what you will harness the dogs before your first journey. You will drive about 60-80km and see sleepy lappish villages as you head north into the arctic taiga forests. Reach a kota in Kienaja in the late evening where after feeding the dogs, you will have dinner and spend the night.
Our day starts early in the morning, when the stars are still bright, we will prepare the dogs and leave for a 70-90km journey. Our route continues up north, until Yllas. Admire the stunning beauty of a Lappish winter while driving down the trail. Later on we will stop for a long lunch break, feed the dogs and have some rest before pursuing the route. In the late evening you will reach a cabin or hotel in Yllas where you will have the opportunity of a relaxing time in a Finnish sauna.
Today is one of the longest trails we run! 150 km of nonstop mushing to get to our destination in Kätkäsuvanto. We will stop for a lunch break on open fire during the day before continuing this journey, at times it will be challenging. Drive on large hills, bumpy trails until the middle of the night to reach a cabin in Kätkäsuvanto for a sauna and overnight stay.
In the early morning, you will leave and drive about 100 km crossing the Tornio river into Sweden and heading east towards Jukkasjarvi. Much along the ‘Tobacco trail’, an old trade trail also used for a sleddog race held in february. The trail winds through that special border area between tundra and taiga, mountain and valley and as it is still in the dark of night, you may have a chance to see the Northern Lights. Reach a cabin or hotel in Jukkasjarvi where you will spend the night.
After the daily dog chores we can explore the village of Jukkasjarvi, maybe even visit the town of Kiruna, and have a generally relaxed day. In the afternoon we visit the famed ice hotel, this is the ice hotel that started it all years ago, and is still the most imposing of them all. A night in the ice hotel will be the fantastic end to our trip, and after all the wilderness camping in our sleeping bags, the idea of sleeping in an igloo will sound positively warm!
After breakfast, we will harness the dogs and head back to Rovaniemi. It is guaranteed that everyone will be catching up on much needed sleep, after an exciting and extreme week. We will arrive in Rovaniemi in the afternoon and stop at the kennel. After saying goodbye to the dogs it is time to be ready for your airport transfer. Goodbye Lapland!
